First and foremost, what is composition? In photography, composition refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a frame to craft an engaging and visually appealing image. A well-composed photograph directs the viewer's gaze, highlights the subject, and conveys a particular mood or message.
Tips for Arranging Elements in Beach Photography
How do you position sand, sky, waves, and people to create an aesthetically pleasing photo? Here are some techniques I use:
- Horizon Placement: While galleries showcase a variety of images, I typically shoot with the horizon positioned below shoulder height. This technique allows for a focus on the clients' faces rather than the background. By placing the faces against a cleaner backdrop like the sky instead of the waves, the image becomes significantly more striking.
- Utilizing Clouds: On days with fluffy clouds, I enjoy capturing more of the sky. This often requires me to adopt a lower angle, framing you between the clouds for added depth.
- Incorporating Surroundings: Elements like rocks, piers, or marshes can enhance the scene. Personally, I prefer locations where the pier is neither too far nor too close. Beaches such as Fort Fisher, Soundside North, and Topsail provide vibrant backdrops due to the various elements we can incorporate into the photos.
