Challenges of Beach Photography
Capturing moments at the beach presents a variety of challenges. Here are a few to consider:
- Lighting: The enchanting golden hour is fleeting, and my favorite light actually comes after sunset, creating the most romantic skies. However, not every session lasts that long, and some clients prefer earlier shoots to ensure their kids are in bed on time. This is when a photographer needs to adeptly manage different types of lighting, even if it’s not their preferred choice. While parks or downtown areas allow you to seek out shadows to avoid harsh sunlight, the beach can be trickier. This is one of my strengths—navigating challenging lighting conditions by the shore.
- Composition: This is a true test of creativity and a fun aspect to explore. Unlike other settings with various elements to work with, the beach is more limited. Unless you're near the pier or marsh, creating striking photos often revolves around the horizon, clouds, and your subjects. Visit the post dedicated solely to composition at the beach!
- Weather: Wind is a significant factor to consider. If you've visited the North Carolina coast, you know it can be quite breezy, especially at sunset. Why is this an issue? Hair can become unruly! I understand that many clients, particularly moms, are concerned about this. To manage wind, I can always suggest a sunrise session if that’s a priority for you. If sunset is ideal, I will position you so that the wind flows away from your face, minimizing hair interference. My advice? A side-swept hairstyle not only looks lovely but also addresses this challenge. And as for rain, I have a special post on that topic coming soon!
